The Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka

From Benjamin A Ameh, Lagos

All stakeholders in the aviation industry have roles to play if the desire of the Federal government to improve the security and safety of the nation’s airspace is to be achieved.

The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Aviation, Yemi Adelakun made the assertion while inaugurating the newly elected executive committee members of the Ministry’ s chapter of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) in Abuja.

Adelakun noted that the Ministry as the supervising agency of the parastatals in the sector has to be properly positioned to provide the necessary administrative support for its realization; adding that as Senior Civil Servants, members of the association should see themselves as drivers of the reforms in the aviation sector.

The Permanent Secretary, who was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Human Resource Management, Abubakar Ali Tsafe reminded the staff of the promise and commitment of the Minister, Osita Chidoka towards improving their welfare, especially as it concerns allowances and office accommodation, charging them to be more committed to service delivery.

According to the source, Adelakun also urged the members of the association to see themselves as partners in the management of the Ministry and reminded them that resort to antagonisms and strikes have become outmoded in modern day unionism.

Responding to the charges, the Association’ s Chairman, Yunusa Abdulsalam (Comrade) promised that though the Association will always strive for the improvement of members’ welfare, it would always be through negotiations and constant dialogue with the management. Abdulsalam informed the management of the Ministry on the urgent need to provide conducive office accommodation; inferring that the current arrangement which has offices scattered around does not augur well in terms of cohesion and staff interaction.

He commend the past efforts of the Ministry in the areas of training and manpower development said that more is still required in view of the new directions set out by the new Minister to achieve the desired goals of the Transformation Agenda in the aviation sector.
