A Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded an applicant, Samuel Anyaogu, 29, in prison for allegedly killing his two daughters.

He allegedly dumped the bodies of the two children, whom he had from a concubine, in a stream.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Levi Animoku, who gave the order, described the crime as horrifying.

He said, “It is the highest crime known to our laws. This court declines to admit the accused to bail. Consequently, he shall be remanded at the Federal Prison, Koton-Karfe.”

Animoku adjourned the case till October 18, 2016, for mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sergeant Tuesday Ganagana, told the court that the matter was reported at the ‘A’ Police Division in Lokoja by the mother of the children, identified as Grace Edwin.

Ganagana told court that Edwin of the Nataco area of Lokoja alleged that in the afternoon of December 25, 2015, Anyaogu suffocated her nine-month-old baby, Chinonso.

He said the accused carried out the crime by covering the baby’s nostrils and mouth, pretending to be playing with her.

The prosecutor said the baby was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, where she was confirmed dead.

Ganagana said that the complainant also alleged that on December 26, 2015, the accused put the corpse of the dead child in a sack and threw it into a stream in Lokoja.

He said that the accused again on January 1, 2016, hit Edwin’s first daughter, two-year-old Miracle Edwin with a heavy object, killing the girl.

He disclosed that the corpse was again thrown into the same stream in Lokaja.

He added that the accused threatened to kill Edwin if she revealed the cause of the death of the two children to anybody.

The complainant told the court that she did not have courage to report the matter until her family members forced her to reveal the truth and later compelled her to report the matter to the police.

Earlier Counsel to the accused, Mr O.S. Atokolo, applied for Anyaogu’s bail, citing Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution; and Section 341(2) of the Criminal Code.

But the application was opposed by the prosecutor, who said that investigation into the matter was still on
