Juwah was represented at the event by Director of Public Affairs of the NCC; Tony Ojobo noted that the telecoms sector currently contributes more than 8.5 per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Director pointed out that the achievements recorded in the sector in the last 13 years till date  stood at 127 million telephone subscribers in the country, as of January 2014, from a subscriber base of less than 400,000 in 2001.

As a result, he affirmed that Nigeria has something very significant to celebrate about its successes in the area of telecommunications development.

“Ojobo who could hold bare in this achievement of more than 127 million lines as of January 2014, from less than 400,000 in 2001, and has earned a teledensity of more than 91 per cent is something to be proud of as we celebrate our centenary history.

“We are proud to say that the NCC is the agency that superintended the revolution which has put Nigeria in the global map as the fastest growing telecommunications market for five consecutive years according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

“Nigeria now occupies 11th position in terms of internet users, and in Africa, it occupies number one position. As at 2011, less than 10,000 Nigerians had access to internet, but today, about 50 million Nigerians have access to the internet.
