To Achieve Transformation Goals: Onolememen anchors on sustainable infrastructure provisions

The Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen affirmed the commitment of the Federal of Nigerian Government to the provision of sustainable road infrastructure in the country in its desire to confer on a strong economy that will be among the highest 20s in the world by the year 2020 as well as make Nigerian roads motorable.

Onolememen made this declaration during a presentation and launching of a book titled: “Construction and Housing in Nigeria” by Professor Kunle Ade Wahab at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

He stated that the presentation and launching of the book is a wakeup call on all Nigerians, particularly professionals in the construction industry not to lose sight of the values which form the basic foundation upon which every nation thrives. He added that there is constant need to undertake an organized regular and improvement programme in the various sub-sectors of the construction industry, in order to reach out to the inner core of Nigerians and highlight the need to maintain building codes and construction standards at all times.

The Minister was represented at the occasion by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works, Abubakar Koro Muhammad (Dr) further challenged all the professional bodies in the construction industry to live up to the expectation of both the Government and the people by insuring that clearly defined measurable guidelines remain the criteria for the use of materials on all Federal Government projects that meet best global practices.

Onolememen reiterated that for Nigeria to achieve the Vision 2020 objectives, roads must be motor-able, water flow unhindered, power generation and distribution be effective all year round and the transportation system should be assured as well as adequate housing facilities to accommodate the teeming population of the country. He further explained that the attainment of these laudable goals would serve as solution to the prevailing challenges in the construction industry. “We must surmount these daunting challenges, in order to have a National Rebirth and Sustainable Development across the six geo-political zones of the country,” he averred.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Book Presentation and Launching Planning Committee, Jamiu Adio Saka, while delivering his welcome address stated that the Committee is convinced about the immense importance of the book to the nation, lecturers, students, practitioners, key actors and regulatory bodies in the building and construction industry. He added that the successful management of any economy depends greatly on the ability of the nation in question to enshrine due process programmes into the efficient management of public resources.

Also delivering his welcome address at the event, the Chairman of the occasion, Martin Luther Agwai (Gen Rtd) described the author of the book as a catalyst for educational development in Nigeria, stating that the author has contributed immensely to scholarship in the field of building and construction in the country.

The book launch was facilitated by the ‘Kunle Ade Wahab Education Foundation’ (Kadewa Foundation) whose vision is to support and help build the capacity of bright and intelligent students of tertiary institutions. The foundation also has as its mission, helping students to fulfill their educational dreams and making them leaders and agents of peace, who are capable of helping themselves and influencing their communities for good.
