Olanike Florence Banjo is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of NikkyB Party Solutions, a catering services company. She studied mass communication at The Polytechnic, Ibadan and she is a certified business communication professional (CBCP) and worked with Multilinks Telecommunications. In this media parley with Ikechi Nzeakor, she bare her mind on her business and other issues. Excerpts:

Olanike Florence Banjo is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of NikkyB Party SolutionsTell us about your company. What does the company do?

Nikky B Paerty Solution is a professional catering services company that renders catering services at social events.

What motivated you to set up the company?

I love cooking right from a young age. It is something I have always had a passion for because I love tasty and delicious food.

Also, I love the satisfaction people get when they eat whatever I make. When I was with Multilinks, I used to help organise food for small gatherings such as colleagues’ birthdays and other events. After I left Multilinks, I decided to start my own catering service, since it was something I had passion for.

What kind of catering service do you provide?

We do both indoor and outdoor catering services; we also provides for homes at affordable prices.

Are they African or continental cuisines? What different kind of menus do you provide?

We offer both African and continental cuisines. We provide both Nigerian dishes and continental dishes.

Do you provide services for individuals or small and large groups of people?

We render services to individuals (meal deals for homes), small and large groups of people.

Do you service the public or do you wait for clients to place orders?

We wait for clients to place orders and we get referrals.

What space were you trying to fill and what did you intend to achieve by setting up the company?

I wanted to provide good and quality cuisines to people, and render prompt services to customers’ satisfaction.

Some entrepreneurs say getting competent hands to work for them is an issue; what is you experience in that regard?

So far so good; I have been blessed with a good team of people who are competent and hardworking, always willing to go the extra mile to achieve excellence.

What is your assessment of catering industry in the country and how has it fared?

It is growing and getting better with new innovations and brilliant ideas. It has fared well despite the challenges.

What type of challenges has the company faced and how did you overcome them?

The increase and fluctuations in prices of goods in the market have been a big challenge.

The passion for the job and seeing people being fed with good quality and tasty food has been a just reward despite the challenges.

What is motivating to continue in the business despite the challenges?

My passion for catering is motivating me to continue on job.

How has the recession affected the business?

It brought about an increase in the prices of goods and services, but we have fared well by God’s grace.

Do you use Nigerian foodstuffs or do you import them?

We use both Nigerian and foreign foodstuffs.

What is your advice to SME operators on how to survive the hard times?

Remain focused and be passionate about what you do. Don’t over promise and under-deliver.

What advice do you have for young people who want to do the catering business?

You need to have passion for it, don’t despise little beginnings. Know how cook and humble yourself to learn from experienced hands. Also, don’t despise constructive criticism it helps you to get better.
