The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (Son), Director General (DG) Osita Abolomo  said shortly before destroying substandard items at Epe in Lagos “We are destroying these seizures items from our system by sending strong signal to those who engaged in illegal business. The people cannot continue to takes advantage of Nigeria by imports substandard or doping substandard in Nigeria, he added.

“These are cartons of saving sticks that imported into Nigeria that are labeling made even carrying Nigeria sign as if they are manufactured in country. This is dangerous which capable of given young men skin cancer instead of smooth skin.”

Abolomo use the occasion to solicit for Journalists support as he put it “I employ journalists to be quality vanguard of the agency in reporting any suspected illegal activities that not carrying Son logo to the nearest SON office for prompt action.”

He said, we have fake spare parts, oil filter which instead of filtering oil can destroy engine.

DG pointed out that in addition to this items, we are destroying at this site, we have some items highly sophisticated eg aluminum coil, tyres and tubes etc that needs special machine to destroying them first before the finally burn them due environmental and safety to human life if burn them directly at Ogba Lab, Ikeja.

In response SON DG do said that it is difficult to determine value of the items due to substandard quality adding that if it is of standard then SON can determine through it system. However, the value should be about (N50000.00) half a million Naira.

He further pointed out that our items destruction is not the first auction as SON always check if some items with minus non-conformity that can be rectified to conform with SON standard mandate will be rectifying and returned them to the market but when it cannot be rectified , it always be destroys.

Abolomo reiterated that “destruction is not targeted to the economy strength of the people because no nation will place economy strength over above wellbeing of his citizenry.

So safety and wellbeing of nation first before economy consideration that is our mandate and that we are doing always.”

This is tubes …expired tubes which was expired about three to four years ago with rusted valve still find it way into our system. So by cutting them first prevent the suspected buyers from have access to them.

This is why SON is doing by trying to takes a way burn in wheel from our road. Burn in wheel because when they are stacked into each other their biometrics ring will be destroyed. The wire ring will be become weak, therefore no longer safe for use on the road. Such tyres become burn in wheel. This is what we are trying to takes out of our road.  We needs some concerted efforts from the public adding that if you suspected any unwholesome practice around report the activities to the nearest SON office to you for quick response
