Tin Can Customs Command confiscates 93 containers from smugglers

Customs Area Controller in charge of Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Tajudeen Olanrewaju has disclosed that from January to March 2013, the command have enriched Federal Government pocket with a total sum of N50,177,636,394.00 [fifty billion, one hundred and seventy-seven million, six hundred and thirty-six thousand, three hundred and ninety-four Naira] as against N52,858,875, 601.00 [fifty-two billion, eight hundred and fifty-eight million, eight hundred and seventy-eight thousand, six hundred and one Naira] with difference of  N2, 680, 639, 207.00 [two billion, six hundred and eighty million, six hundred and thirty-nine thousand, two hundred and seven Naira] declined over the preceding quarter

Olanrewaju stated this on Friday during the press briefing at TCIPC Office that the short fall can be attributed to various reforms in the financial sector and sharp drop in cargo throughput

 

The Tin Can Island Port command Boss said our efforts to reduce smuggling to its barest minimum led to the seizure of 61 by 40’’ [sixty-one of forty feet containers] and 32 by 20’’ [thirty of twenty feet containers] respectively of offending importers reigning from parboiled rice from Indian, electrical cables, mosquito coil, expired frozen fish, used cloths, used tyres, tissue papers, soft drinks, generators, lace material, television stands, automotive batteries, falsely and under declared vehicles etc, all with a Duty Paid Value [DPV] of over [three hundred and six million, six hundred thousand]  N306,600, 000.00

Olanrewaju stress further that in other to achieve a user friendly business environment in the port, we need to collaborate and synergise with other security agencies and by extensions other critical stakeholders. This ensured a robust customs/business partnership, he affirmed

‘‘We have devised strategies to encourage legitimate and compliant trades. To this end, compliant traders enjoy speedy clearance of their cargo from the port, while the non-compliant ones are those that usually complain of delays in processing their declarations. The effectiveness of our ICT centre in cargo clearance cannot be over emphassed’ ‘, he stated

Finally, Olanrewaju said ‘Government’s efforts to create an enabling business environment in the ports, and our Comptroller General of Customs Services stance on quality service delivery are highly commendable.’
