The Tin Can Island Port Customs Command today warned every duty evader that the Command would devote the ’ember’ months towards effective enforcement of duty payment, as well as revenue increase, and anyone who runs foul of the law would not be spared.

The Command Customs Area Controller  (CAC) Bashar Yusuf indicated this, noting that while his Command has generated N183bn between January and August 2017, he is still genuinely ‘hungry’ to significantly raise revenue, based on the usual increased activities of the months of September, October, November and December.

The Command has had a sustained high revenue profile since the beginning of the year, with the August 2017 figures alone put at an unprecedented feat of over N28bn; which Bashar attributed to “deliberate creative policies” and “stimulus plans aimed at blocking all possible areas of revenue loss”.

“The revenue for August alone stood at over N28 billion, which is the highest in the annals of the Command, particularly in the corresponding periods over the years past”, Bashar Yusuf stated, highlighting that the Command actually recorded N156bn during the same period of 2016.

“It therefore implies that but for the exclusion of 41 items from Forex window, the Command could have doubled its revenue profile”, he stated further, offering a breakdown which showed that the Tin Can Island Command is becoming more thorough in its Revenue drive,  with all high yielding revenue consignments being closely monitored, to avoid circumvention of procedure.

He maintained that because has raised the bar, the Command would continue to develop adequate operational template and modalities that would be capable of entrenching integrity and dexterity in the acumen of his Officers.

The Controller appreciated the compliance level of stakeholders in the Port to fiscal policies of the Federal Government in terms of trade while advising few recalcitrant ones to toe the path of sanity through honest declaration in their documentations, stressing that integrity, due diligence, honest declarations and transparency were key elements in 21st Century Customs Operations.

He emphasised the importance of leadership skills as critical to success and advised the officers in charge of the Terminals, alongside other Senior officers to exhibit high moral/ethical standard needed to showcase quality leadership for the actualization of set goals and objectives.

Bashir urged importers to avoid the temptations of thinking that sharp practices would not be detected in the pressures of heightened activities of months preceding Yuletide, adding that any importer of uncustomed goods would be brought to book.

“All Importers ought to be conversant with the external tariff, especially schedule 3 & 4 (prohibition other than trade and absolute prohibition)”,

The contrller in his usual way, urging patriotic Nigerians, to always oblige the Command with credible information about illicit transactions or documentation, because the identity of such informant would be jealously guarded.
