Tincan Customs buoys trade facilitation with new scheme

The Nigeria Customs, Tincan Area Command has commenced implementation of conduct of examinations in the terminals to facilitate legitimate trade.The Controller Tincan Island Port, Bashar Y.U, who disclosed this during a stakeholders forum directed that the pilot scheme commence with Ports and Cargo Terminal from September 5th 2016.

The meeting, which was at the instance of the Area Controller was aimed at identifying grey areas that could hinder the concept of trade facilitation and promotion of international trade, with a view to proffering solutions.

Customs Public Relations Officer, Tin Can Island Port, Uche Ejesieme, in a statement quoted Bashar as saying trade facilitation could be achieved in an atmosphere of honest declaration, which will ultimately allow for a seamless flow of documentation in the system.
The Controller posited that all effort would be made to create on enabling environment for honest declarants to thrive in their business in the spirit and letter of trade facilitation.
He noted that the Customs has what it takes in terms of advanced technology to monitor transactions and ensuring revenue leakages are blocked. The Controller however urged the stakeholders to take advantage of the full automation of Customs processes and procedures for the advancement of their transactions.

Noting that the export potentials in the country has not been fully explored, he urged stakeholders to create the awareness on their respective associations so that emphasis will be on ways of utilizing the export potential of the country in order to become major players in the economic sector as well as wealth creators, thereby surviving the presents global economic uncertainties.

Similarly, the Controller recently handed over a 40ft container of suspected expired medical devices to the NAFDAC for necessary action, just as he handed over two suspects to Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) for falsification of documents relating to SON.

However, Command has declared a revenue collection of N26.2 billion in the month of August, 2016.This figure, according to Customs Public Relations Officer, Tincan Command, Uche Ejesieme, represents a positive signal going by the indices of the previous month.

The Controller had expressed his determination to institute operational reforms and policies that will guarantee maximum revenue collections.The measures include creating the necessary awareness on the stakeholders towards complying with the Federal Government’s fiscal policies on terms of trade.

The Controller reiterated that the full automation and computerization of Customs processes and procedures have helped in enhancing the general performance of the Service, coupled with his insistence that due diligence must be followed in all transactions.

He however assured that even in the face of the current global economic recession, Tincan Island Port will not relent in it’s statutory mandate of revenue generation through various interventionist methods particularly where infractions are dictated.He promised to make Tincan Island Port user friendly for honest importers who are prepared to display high sense of integrity and responsibility.
