Freight forwarders operating alleged failure of the server of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Apapa port complex in Lagos as they has difficult for cargoes to be captured and released.

The freight forwarders revealed that the Customs server has been epileptic since last week adding that it had caused a lot of delays in clearing the cargoes out of the port.

The source revealed that the Web Fontain; providers of the internet technology on behalf of customs have also been criticized for inefficiency even as operators have suggested to custom to get a back-up server in case of future occurrences.

The coordinator, the Save Nigeria Freight Forwarders Importers, Exporters Coalition (SNFFIEC), Sir. Osita Patrick Chukwu said yesterday that the situation still persisted.

Chukwu said that freight forwarders are currently having problems as a result of failures of the server.

“It started last week, since Tuesday, till now the server has been failing, I booked for a car (Toyota Sienna 2004) since Tuesday it did not come out, it only came out yesterday”.

He said that this has forced the customs to a weekend job which it hardly usually does.

He said that the server failure also affected the custom DTI cafes around Apapa.

“Web Fontain facilities are failing Nigerians, why should custom use only Web Fontain? Does it mean there is no other one better than Web Fontain? The congestion in the port is as a result of server malfunction”, he stressed.

Chukwu further lamented that agents are paying demurrage because the customs has failed to write the terminal operators on the issue.

“They should be able to bear responsibilities when it is mandatory to be bear”

Speaking in the same vein, a frontline freight forwarder, Mr. Frank Aliakor confirmed to that the server was down for two days, thereby grounding clearing activities.

“It failed Thursday and Friday and the one of Monday was an aftermath of last week, over the weekend there was nothing to do”, he also said.

Aliakor said that agents have approached the management of APM Terminal for possible waivers of the two days, but that the terminal operator has refused.

He reiterated that “there was fluctuation in the server early last week, after sometimes it picks and fails, but by Friday it collapsed finally”

“We are trying to get across to APMT for waiver but the terminal has said that it is not their fault.”
