Nigeria’s oil and gas sector would lose 18,000 jobs if the proposed sale of the Federal government’s shares in  the Nigeria National Liquefied  Gas Limited, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN)  has said.

Fortune Obi, the National Public Relations Officer of the union, who  revealed this in a statement yesterday commended  the House of Representatives’ decision to caution the Federal Government to suspend the proposed sale of her shares in Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).

Obi said the development was in tandem with the position on the need for the government to retain its shares’ ownership in the company.

He said rather than sell its shares, the  government should explore other options to fund the economy rather than selling a viable company like NLNG which dividends was used to kick start and finance the economy when Nigeria was in recession.

“NLNG has bailed out Nigeria when the country was in recession as proceeds from its dividends were used to finance the economy. Those investors who were clamouring for the FG to sale her shares in NLNG should find another means of injecting their resources into the economy instead of buying a successful company.

“In the alternative, they should set up their own LNG project and help the country in utilising its large gas reserves as well as eradicating gas flaring in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, the  PENGASSAN Corporate Headquarters branch of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has conferred the union’s highest award of prudence and integrity on the Group Managing Director of the corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru.

Conferring the award on Dr. Baru, the Branch Chairman, Comrade Mathew Duru, applauded him for operating an open-door policy and for always making staff welfare a priority.

Comrade Duru noted that the continuous harmonious working relations between the current management and staff were because of the sterling leadership of the GMD and his management team, assuring that the unions would continue to provide all the needed support to enable it to deliver on its mandate.

Speaking in a similar vein, Comrade Pajara Ndiuno,  the National General Secretary of NNPC Retired Staff Association, thanked the GMD for having the interest of both staff and retirees at heart, stressing that his leadership style has given them a sense of belonging.

In his response, NNPC GMD, Dr. Baru thanked the union for conferring its highest award on him, assuring that he and his management team would continue to maintain harmonious working industrial relations with the entire staff.

Dr. Baru assured that the drive of the current management was to ensure that the morale of staff and the retirees always receive a boost to guarantee a healthy operating environment
