NPA MD advises women to cultivate excellent work ethics

The Managing Director,Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman has advised women, especially business owners and workers to embrace excellence in all aspects of their endeavours.

Speaking during the Women in Business roundtable and luncheon in Abuja recently, Bala-Usman said it was only excellence that would set a woman apart and stop people from relegating her to the background.

She said, “When you have an opportunity to perform or speak, make sure you excel. Don’t be the stereotype woman who always comes late to meetings

Be confident, make your presence felt. Don’t be the woman who has nothing to say at management meetings because if you do that, they will relegate you to that unimportant task.

“Such a woman’s space is considered an absent space, an opportunity lost.”

Bala-Usman who spoke on the topic, ‘Freeing yourself from Fear’ stated that fear paralysed people and prevented them from taking bold steps.

She said, “Some women are afraid of failure, but our real failure is the inability to look fear in the face and call its bluff.

Resist the temptation not to ask for what you need. For every yes, there are seven no(s).

“Every successful person has received numerous no(s) the experience of having quite a number of no(s) in your life makes you develop thick skin.”

She also urged women to be ready to take risk and push back every boundaries that tended to limit them from success in every desires of their heart.

The NPA MD advised women in paid employment who could not find fulfillment to leave such jobs and pursue their dreams.

Bala-Usman said women should not force people to follow their steps, adding that “your integrity and credibility will stand you out and such will automatically generate followers for you.”

As part of the highlights of the event, 15 new members from across the country were inducted as associates of the organisation by Olubunmi Aboderin-Talabi who is the Chairperson of WIMBIZ.
