‘Only 2.3m vehicles insured’

There are only 2.3 million insured vehicles on Nigerian roads, the immediate past president, Nigeria Insurers Association (NIA), Eddie Efekoha has said.

He spoke during a press briefing with reporters in Lagos.

Efekoha stated that the 2.3 million vehicles were captured through the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID).

He said NIID is a pet project of the association on motor and marine insurance that has helped to curb fraudulent cases.

According to him, a situation where a person makes claim from up to five insurance companies has been nip in the bud.

He nobody can insure a vehicle twice under the system particularly if it overlaps by way of period or double insurance.

He said: “We have continued to improve on the NIID. We now have USSD where you can check the validity of your policy on your phone.

“The NIID have helped curb fraudulent cases. We have had cases where somebody made a claim from up to five of us. You cannot insure a vehicle twice under the system particularly if it overlaps by way of period or double insurance kind of situation. We have also extended NIID to marine insurance.”
