The high-profile event, which brought together key stakeholders from government agencies, development partners, and the private sector, was anchored by Mr. Sunday Micheal Ogwu, a renowned economic analyst and business journalist. Ogwu described the event as “a timely and impactful intervention” in Nigeria’s ongoing effort to support SMEs facing mounting energy-related challenges.

Speaking during the campaign launch, the Director General of ACCI, Ms. Victoria Akai, emphasized the urgent need to address energy inefficiencies that continue to erode SME profitability. She noted that energy remains one of the highest operational costs for businesses in Nigeria, and that the campaign is designed to promote awareness, education, and the adoption of smarter energy practices.

“This initiative is a strategic response to the growing concerns of the SME community. We are not only raising awareness but also providing practical knowledge and access to cleaner energy alternatives,” Akai said.

In his reflections, Mr. Ogwu highlighted the campaign as a forward-thinking move to bridge the knowledge gap in energy usage among business owners. “It was an honour to moderate discussions that go beyond theory and focus on real, applicable solutions. This campaign speaks directly to the pain points of everyday entrepreneurs — from manufacturers and retailers to service providers — who struggle with high energy bills and unstable power supply,” he stated.

Panel sessions featured representatives from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), and private sector experts who shared insights on policy reforms, energy-saving technologies, and available support systems for SMEs.

Development partners at the event commended ACCI’s leadership in championing sustainable business practices. Many pledged support for the campaign’s next phase, which will involve on-the-ground sensitization, technical training for SMEs, and the development of an online energy efficiency toolkit.

The campaign is expected to run nationwide with a focus on Nigeria’s major business clusters, targeting thousands of SMEs with actionable steps to reduce their energy consumption while increasing competitiveness.

For Mr. Sunday Micheal Ogwu, who has moderated numerous economic forums, the event was particularly significant. “This is not just a policy conversation — it’s a business survival conversation. Energy efficiency is no longer optional; it is essential for resilience in today’s business environment,” he added.

The ACCI’s Energy Efficiency Awareness Campaign marks a new chapter in the push for a more sustainable, cost-efficient business ecosystem in Nigeria — a move many believe will have far-reaching impact on the country’s economic growth trajectory.
