The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has highlighted the critical role of innovative financing in driving sustainable growth within Africa’s maritime industry. Speaking at the 7th Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Dr. Mobereola reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in the maritime sector.

According to Dr. Mobereola, “Nigeria is dedicated to enhancing safety, security, decarbonization, and the marine environment through technology and innovation for a sustainable future.” He described the conference as a pivotal platform to address challenges such as sustainable energy, regional security, and economic development.

The NIMASA DG called for international cooperation and innovative financing models to support infrastructure development and digital transformation across Africa’s maritime sector. “We advocate for financial and technical backing from our regional and global partners. By strengthening adherence to frameworks like the Djibouti and Yaoundé Codes of Conduct, Nigeria aims to reinforce its role in combating piracy and maritime crime across West Africa,” he added.

The AAMA, established to unify African maritime administrations, provides a forum for collaboration on issues critical to the continent’s maritime interests. When Nigeria hosted the 3rd AAMA Conference in 2017, a strategic master plan was developed to advance the goals outlined in the African Maritime Transport Charter. AAMA continues to promote regional, continental, and international cooperation, harmonizing policies essential for the sector’s growth and sustainability.
