As the debate surrounding tax reform bills intensifies across Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has fostered stronger collaboration between tax professionals and the media through a series of workshops. These workshops aim to enhance public understanding of the proposed tax reforms, ensuring that key stakeholders are well-informed about the potential impacts on various sectors of the economy. By engaging the media, CITN seeks to build a more transparent dialogue around the reforms, empowering both tax professionals and the public to actively participate in the ongoing discussions. On Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) hosted its 4th Edition of the Presidential Press Briefing and Media Workshop for Tax/Finance Reporters and Correspondents at the Tax Professionals’ House in Ikeja, Lagos. The event was designed to foster collaboration between tax professionals and the media, providing an essential platform for knowledge-sharing and capacity building in the field of taxation.
In his welcome address, Prof. Godwin Oyedokun, Chairman of the Branding, Publicity, and Publications Committee, underscored the significance of the workshop, emphasizing the media’s crucial role in shaping public opinion and influencing national policy decisions. He expressed deep appreciation for CITN’s President, Barrister Samuel Agbeluyi, for his steadfast leadership and commitment to promoting tax education in Nigeria. The media, he noted, is pivotal in disseminating accurate tax information, making this partnership all the more vital for informed public discourse.
Prof. Oyedokun also recognized the invaluable collaboration of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN), which played a central role in bringing the event to fruition. He further acknowledged the efforts of the CITN management, led by Mrs. Afolake Oso, FCTI, Registrar/Chief Executive, for their meticulous organization of the workshop.
In line with CITN’s mission, the workshop featured sessions designed to equip media practitioners with practical knowledge on taxation. These included presentations on basic taxation terminologies by Dr. Ismaila Olotu, an introduction to tax administration and practice by Mr. Olumide Esan, and tax reporting techniques tailored for journalists by Barr. Chukwuemeka Eze.
Prof. Oyedokun urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, emphasizing that the workshop would not only enhance their understanding of taxation but also provide an opportunity to engage with experts and peers, ultimately fostering more informed and responsible tax reporting.
Effective collaboration between tax professionals and the media is crucial for improving public understanding of taxation’s impact on economic development. Taxation is a complex field, often filled with technical jargon and policy intricacies, making it difficult for the average citizen to comprehend its significance. A partnership between tax professionals and journalists can bridge this gap, ensuring that tax policies and their implications are communicated clearly and effectively.
Celestine Ukpong a public analyst pointed out that fostering collaboration between tax professionals and the media is essential for enhancing public understanding of the critical role taxation plays in national economic development. Through education, clear communication, regular engagement, and joint advocacy, both sectors can work together to improve tax literacy, increase compliance, and contribute to a more robust economy, he added. The media’s role in shaping perceptions and influencing policy decisions makes them an invaluable partner in promoting sustainable tax systems, Ukpong noted.
The event concluded with a collective commitment to deepening the partnership between the media and tax professionals, working together to improve public understanding of taxation and its role in Nigeria’s economic development.
