Reflection on a Close Call: How NSIB’s Swift Action Reinforces Aviation Safety Standards
In the annals of aviation safety, the date December 6, 2024, will stand out as a testament to both the resilience of skilled crew members and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau’s (NSIB) unwavering commitment to passenger safety. A Fly Bird HS 125 aircraft, operating from Abuja to Accra, faced a rare and alarming technical ordeal mid-flight, culminating in the loss of both engines. Yet, thanks to the composure of its crew and a prompt response, tragedy was averted.
The journey began uneventfully from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Shortly after departure, as the aircraft climbed towards cruising altitude, the crew detected an issue with engine No.2. Their training and quick thinking led to a decisive decision to return to Abuja. However, the situation worsened during descent when engine No.2 failed completely, and the remaining engine also lost power as they approached 5,000 feet. In a moment of immense pressure, the pilots declared a Mayday and executed an emergency landing. The successful return to Abuja Airport was a remarkable feat of skill and composure, ensuring the safety of all four individuals onboard.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) immediately launched an investigation, emphasizing its commitment to uncovering the root causes of this rare incident. The Bureau’s “Go Team” has been tasked with reviewing the aircraft’s flight data and maintenance records and conducting in-depth interviews. This proactive approach underscores NSIB’s pivotal role in enhancing aviation safety across Nigeria and beyond.
Reflecting on this incident, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, reiterated the Bureau’s mandate: “Our investigations are not about assigning blame but about uncovering truths that will prevent future occurrences and ensure the highest safety standards in transportation.”
This incident, while alarming, serves as a powerful reminder of the value of rigorous training, robust safety protocols, and an investigative body dedicated to continuous improvement. The lessons drawn from this close call will undoubtedly shape future safety measures, strengthening the confidence of travelers in Nigerian aviation.
As investigations continue, the aviation community, passengers, and regulatory bodies alike remain assured of NSIB’s resolve to ensure that every incident becomes a stepping stone toward a safer tomorrow.
