Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun has etched her name in history as the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, Balogun’s story is one of perseverance, ambition, and breaking barriers.

Her journey with the NCS began in 2002, when she joined as a Customs Assistant, serving as a cabin crew member in the Service’s Airwing Unit. Despite facing challenges, Balogun held fast to her dreams of ascending from cabin crew to the cockpit, a goal she achieved through sheer determination and institutional support.

In a reflective interview, Balogun recounted the tough decisions that shaped her career. “While many of my colleagues moved to higher-paying airline jobs, I chose to stay in the Service. My commitment to public service and my dream of becoming a pilot were my guiding lights,” she shared.

Her impressive academic and professional credentials underscore her dedication. Balogun earned an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services and a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University. She went on to obtain her Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, with full sponsorship from the NCS.

Now flying for the NCS Airwing, Balogun is not only a trailblazer but also a source of inspiration for women across Nigeria. “Becoming the first female pilot in the NCS isn’t just about me. It’s about showing women everywhere that no dream is too big, and no barrier is insurmountable,” she said.

Her achievements have drawn commendation from the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who praised her resilience and the Service’s commitment to nurturing talent. “Balogun’s success is a testament to what can be achieved with determination and institutional support. Her journey exemplifies the heights that are possible when ambition meets opportunity,” he remarked.

As she continues to soar in her career, Balogun remains dedicated to inspiring others. “I hope my story encourages young Nigerians, especially women, to dream big, work hard, and break through barriers,” she said.

Olanike Nafisat Balogun’s ascent from cabin crew to pilot is more than a personal triumph; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of perseverance.
