Lagos hosted a significant gathering of maritime stakeholders on Dockworkers Day 2024, with industry leaders, union representatives, and government officials coming together to celebrate the contributions of dockworkers to Nigeria’s economy. The event, held at the heart of the nation’s maritime hub, underscored the critical role of dockworkers in facilitating trade and driving economic growth.
Reflecting on the past, Mr. Abba Jibril, Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services at NIMASA acknowledged the strides made in improving dockworkers’ welfare while emphasizing the need for continuous collaboration among stakeholders. He called for innovative ideas and collective support to enhance capacity-building initiatives, ensuring that dockworkers are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the maritime industry.
The occasion also served as a platform to align with the broader vision of the federal government. Mr. Abba lauded the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, for his dedication to developing the sector in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This collaboration underscores the government’s resolve to create a thriving maritime ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders.
The Executive Director concluded by expressing gratitude to all contributors who made the event a success. He reminded participants that while the journey toward improving dockworkers’ welfare is challenging, the collective commitment to global best practices and ethical standards will yield worthwhile results.
Prominent attendees included Bolaji Sunmola, President of the Stevedoring Operators Association of Nigeria (SOAN); Princess Vicky Haastrup, Chairperson of the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN); Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN); and Comrade Uzoije Ikaumuna, former MWUN President-General. The event also welcomed Mr. Abba Jibril, Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services at NIMASA, among other distinguished guests.
Acknowledging Dockworkers’ Contributions
During the celebration, speakers highlighted the pivotal role dockworkers play in ensuring the smooth operation of Nigerian ports and facilitating international trade. Princess Haastrup emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive environment for dockworkers, stating:
“Dockworkers are the backbone of our maritime industry. Their dedication keeps our ports functioning efficiently, and we must continue to prioritize their welfare and professional growth.”
Comrade Adeyanju echoed these sentiments, applauding the resilience and hard work of dockworkers despite the challenges faced in the sector:
“Today, we celebrate the unsung heroes of the maritime industry. Their efforts contribute significantly to the nation’s economy, and we remain committed to advocating for their rights and better working conditions.”

In his remarks, Mr. Abba Jibril of NIMASA stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, unions, and terminal operators to ensure sustainable growth in the sector. He noted:
“The progress of our maritime industry relies on the collective efforts of all stakeholders. NIMASA will continue to champion initiatives that improve the welfare and productivity of dockworkers while driving efficiency in port operations.”
