As the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) prepares for its highly anticipated 2024 annual conference, all arrangements have been finalized for the induction of Dr. Paul Adalikwu, Secretary-General of the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA), as a Patron of the association.
Dr. Adalikwu, a distinguished Nigerian professional, was elected as MOWCA’s Secretary-General during the 16th Extraordinary Session of its General Assembly in Accra, Ghana, held from November 16 to 18, 2021. His first four-year term, with the potential for renewal, has seen remarkable achievements, including repositioning MOWCA to spearhead marine and blue economy development across the West and Central African region.
Maritime stakeholders have lauded Dr. Adalikwu’s performance, describing his induction as a Patron of AMJON as a strategic step to further highlight his contributions to MOWCA and the regional maritime industry. His leadership has elevated MOWCA’s profile as a 25-nation maritime powerhouse, fostering collaboration and innovation in the sector.
The induction ceremony will be a key highlight of the AMJON 2024 Lecture, scheduled to take place on Thursday at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos. This year’s conference, themed “Nigeria’s Maritime/Blue Economy Industry under the Renewed Hope Agenda: What is New,” aims to ignite fresh discussions on how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy can unlock Nigeria’s $1.9 trillion blue economy potential.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, while Dr. Adalikwu will chair the event. Chief Tony Iju Nwabunike, an existing Patron of AMJON, will formally induct Dr. Adalikwu and deliver a keynote address.
The event will also feature notable industry leaders, including Barr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC); Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA); and other prominent CEOs and stakeholders.
Outgoing AMJON President, Paul Ogbuokiri, emphasized that the event will serve as a platform for collaborative dialogue and exploration of the maritime sector’s untapped opportunities. According to Ogbuokiri, the lecture will shed light on government initiatives aimed at actualizing the blue economy’s potential while fostering a conducive environment for investments and sustainable growth.
“Stakeholders and investors will gain insights into the immense opportunities within the sector and the government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for investments to thrive and deliver tangible returns,” Ogbuokiri said.
The 2024 AMJON Lecture will also feature the installation of new patrons and matrons, award presentations to deserving Nigerians, and the inauguration of newly elected executives, led by Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, who will steer the association’s activities for the next three years.
With confirmed attendance from top executives and scheduled paper presentations, the conference promises to be a pivotal event for Nigeria’s maritime industry and its stakeholders.
