NSIB Investigates Boeing 737-400 Runway Excursion at Abuja Airport

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a comprehensive investigation into a runway excursion involving a Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft, with registration and nationality marks 5N-JRT, operated by Allied Air. The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at approximately 10:06 AM local time, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The aircraft, designated as flight AJK206, was arriving from Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. Upon landing on Runway 22, the plane veered off the right side of the runway and came to rest on the adjacent grass verge. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries to the crew or ground personnel, and no fatalities occurred. However, the aircraft sustained significant damage.

Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, ensuring the safety of all involved and securing the area for investigation.

The NSIB, responsible for aviation safety investigations in Nigeria, has already deployed its specialized Go Team to the site. The team will conduct a detailed on-site assessment, gather critical data, and interview all relevant parties to determine the factors that contributed to the incident.

Speaking about the development, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance for the NSIB, assured the public of the bureau’s commitment to uncovering the root cause of the runway excursion. She stated, “Our primary goal is to identify the causal and contributory factors to prevent a recurrence. The safety of all stakeholders remains our top priority.”

While investigations are ongoing, the NSIB has pledged to provide regular updates as more information becomes available.
