Mr. Paul Ogbuokiri’s Farewell Speech
The 5th edition of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) Conference and Awards, held in Apapa, Lagos, was not just a celebration of achievements but a significant moment of transition and reflection. Outgoing AMJON Chairman, Mr. Paul Ogbuokiri, addressed an audience of industry leaders, dignitaries, and stakeholders with a heartfelt speech that captured the essence of the association’s journey and aspirations.
“Every year-end for the past five years, we have gathered in one hall to honor excellence and discuss the pressing issues shaping the Nigerian maritime industry,” Mr. Ogbuokiri began, setting the tone for a reflective and celebratory evening.
The event stood out for its dual significance: the induction of Dr. Paul Adalikwu as the new Patron of AMJON, a role previously held by Chief Tony Iju Nwabunike, and the official transition of leadership to a new set of executives.
Highlighting the theme of the conference, “Nigeria’s Blue Economy Under the Renewed Hope Agenda: What Is New?” Mr. Ogbuokiri underscored the critical opportunities that the newly established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy presents for repositioning the maritime sector. “We have long clamored for this ministry, and now, with a dedicated minister and new agency leadership, the industry must shift into high gear,” he asserted.
Calling for improved ease of doing business at Nigerian ports, Mr. Ogbuokiri commended the government for notable achievements, including:
Sustained zero piracy within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Resolving traffic congestion on Lagos port access roads, through efforts by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Lagos State Government.
However, he emphasized the urgent need to modernize ports to increase cargo throughput and establish Nigeria as a maritime hub for West and Central Africa.
In an emotional moment, Mr. Ogbuokiri expressed gratitude to Chief Tony Nwabunike for his unwavering support and congratulated Dr. Paul Adalikwu on his new role. He also charged the awardees of the evening to continue excelling: “To whom much is given, much is expected. Strive to surpass the standards that earned you this recognition.”
Turning his focus to the incoming leadership team, led by Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, Mr. Ogbuokiri pledged his support, urging them to continue the association’s legacy of progress. “Leadership demands dedication and vision. As my predecessor, President Emeritus Ismail Aniemu, supported me, I promise to extend the same support to the new team,” he said.
New Leadership Vision: DEW Agenda and TIC Mantra
In his inaugural address, Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, the new AMJON Chairman, laid out a bold vision for the association’s future. Under the banner of the DEW Agenda (Development, Empowerment, and Welfare), he emphasized the need for every member to actively contribute to the association’s growth.
“As we take on this responsibility, we must acknowledge the weight of expectations on our shoulders. The electorates have an equally crucial role in ensuring the success of our initiatives by being active, assertive, and productive in their industry reportage,” Mr. Kagbare stated.
He also unveiled the TIC Mantra (Transparency, Inclusivity, and Capacity) as a guiding principle for the new administration. “With the DEW Agenda and TIC Mantra, we are confident that AMJON will solidify its position as the frontline voice of shipping in Nigeria,” he assured.
Acknowledging the inherent challenges of leadership, Mr. Kagbare called for proactive engagement and unity. “In providing solutions, we add value to the system, earning relevance that cannot be ignored. Let us stand together, united in purpose and mission, as we chart a course for our journey with enthusiasm and vigor,” he encouraged.
A United Vision for the Future
As the conference drew to a close, the outgoing Chairman’s reflections and the incoming Chairman’s vision left attendees inspired. With the creation of a dedicated ministry and a renewed leadership team at the helm, AMJON is poised to play a transformative role in shaping Nigeria’s maritime industry.
“AMJON! Progress!” resounded through the hall as attendees pledged their commitment to the association’s goals and to a future of collaboration, innovation, and growth.
