Seplat Energy Plc, a leading Nigerian independent energy company, has emerged as the winner of the Best in Social Impact and Human Capacity Development category at the 2024 Sustainability, Enterprise, and Responsibility Awards (SERAS) Africa. The prestigious event, now in its 18th edition, took place at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos, and recognized Seplat Energy’s outstanding contributions to corporate social investment across health, education, and entrepreneurship.
The SERAS Africa awards celebrate organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment to social development and stakeholder responsibility. The organizers highlighted Seplat Energy’s transformative initiatives in its host communities, emphasizing the alignment of these programs with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 3, and 4, which focus on poverty eradication, health improvement, and access to quality education.
Among the impactful programs recognized were:
Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP): This initiative equips educators and Chief Inspectors of Education with digital teaching skills, leadership training, and income diversification strategies.
PEARLs Quiz: A program that awards scholarships to high-performing secondary school students and supports school infrastructure development through prize funds.
Seplat National Undergraduate Scholarships: Established in 2014, this program provides financial aid to university students, with a focus on beneficiaries from host communities.
Seplat Innovation Programme: This initiative fosters science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education by creating collaborative laboratory spaces.
Seplat JV Eye Can See Programme: A healthcare initiative offering free eye screenings, surgeries, and eyeglasses to underserved populations.
Ken Egbas, founder of SERAS Africa, commended Seplat Energy and other winners for their leadership in sustainability and their contributions to advancing the continent’s socio-economic goals. “These awardees exemplify the transformative role corporations can play in fostering development,” he remarked.
