In a heartfelt Christmas message, Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has urged Nigerian leaders to be more attuned to the pressing needs of the populace, advocating for policies that will significantly improve the quality of life for the nation’s citizens. The Archbishop highlighted the urgency of creating an enabling environment that allows businesses to thrive, which, in turn, would reduce the rampant unemployment and pervasive poverty in the country.
He called on leaders to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians, emphasizing that solutions must focus on combating hunger, poverty, joblessness, and insecurity. The Archbishop acknowledged that while some government policies, like the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and new tax reforms, are aimed at long-term improvements, it is crucial that the immediate welfare of the people is not overlooked in the pursuit of these broader goals. He stressed that people should not have to suffer while waiting for the benefits of these policies to materialize, and called for compassionate and prudent government spending.
Archbishop Martins also underscored the importance of investing in the agricultural sector to secure food supplies for the population. This would help lower the costs of essential foodstuffs like rice, beans, onions, and grains, and ensure that Nigerians can afford the basic necessities of life without depending on temporary palliative measures.
The Archbishop expressed deep sorrow over the recent tragic deaths in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, where innocent Nigerians lost their lives in stampedes while trying to access food palliatives amid the widespread hunger gripping the nation. He called these events both sad and depressing, noting that it is particularly troubling that many Nigerians are struggling to afford basic goods, even during the Christmas season, which is traditionally a time for celebration, sharing, and love.
To prevent further such incidents, the Archbishop urged both federal and state governments, along with legislative bodies, to address the root causes of poverty and hardship. He called for a thorough review of existing laws and the creation of proactive policies that would unlock the business environment, attract investment, and generate more jobs, enabling citizens to meet their basic needs without relying on palliatives.
In his Christmas message, Archbishop Martins also prayed for the souls of those who perished in the recent stampedes, offering condolences to their families and hoping that the peace of Christ would comfort the grieving and bring hope to those suffering in despair.
“This Christmas reminds us of God’s profound love for humanity, exemplified in the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ,” the Archbishop reflected. “May His light shine upon us, filling our hearts with love, compassion, and kindness. As we come together with loved ones, let us remember those less fortunate and engage in acts of charity and generosity, extending our solidarity to those in need.”
