The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the introduction of a whistleblowing website designed to foster transparency and ethical conduct within the Nigerian financial system. The platform, set to go live on January 1, 2025, will provide a safe, confidential channel for reporting misconduct, unethical practices, or legal violations.

In its year-end announcement, the CBN emphasized that the platform represents a major step toward creating a secure environment for individuals to report issues without fear of retaliation. This initiative aligns with the bank’s commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and fostering trust across its operations.

“In furtherance of our commitment to high ethical standards, honesty, and integrity, the Central Bank of Nigeria is launching an externally hosted whistleblowing platform to manage reports of misconduct,” the bank stated.

The platform is open to employees, vendors, consultants, executives, and other stakeholders, enabling them to swiftly and confidentially report concerns. According to the CBN, all submissions will undergo thorough investigations with professionalism and confidentiality.

“The new platform ensures that every report is investigated promptly and with the utmost care, protecting the whistleblower’s identity and rights,” the statement added.

CBN Governor Speaks on Safeguarding Integrity

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso highlighted the platform as a reflection of the bank’s commitment to fostering a credible financial system. He noted that promoting accountability and transparency within the financial sector remains a priority.

“Integrity and transparency are fundamental to our operations. This platform is an important tool in building trust and ensuring accountability in the financial system,” Cardoso said.

Supporting a Safer Financial Ecosystem

The whistleblowing initiative is part of broader efforts by the CBN to create a secure and trustworthy financial environment. Earlier this year, the bank provided dedicated phone numbers and email addresses for reporting issues related to accessing cash at deposit money banks (DMBs) and ATMs. This measure sought to alleviate disruptions in currency circulation and restore public confidence.

Additionally, on December 2, 2024, the CBN unveiled a redesigned website to enhance public access to information on financial policies, regulatory frameworks, and monetary updates. Governor Cardoso remarked that the new website offers a more user-friendly experience and supports the bank’s commitment to transparency and trust-building with stakeholders.

“Information is key to building trust. Through these initiatives, we are ensuring the public can stay informed and engaged,” Cardoso stated during the website launch.

The whistleblowing platform and other reforms reflect the CBN’s proactive steps in addressing challenges and promoting a culture of accountability in Nigeria’s financial sector. Further details about the whistleblowing platform will be shared in the coming months as the January 1 launch date approaches.
