Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed high praise for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its ongoing, relentless efforts in combating drug trafficking and narcotics abuse. Under the leadership of Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), the agency’s transformative and decisive actions have earned it widespread commendation. HURIWA also recognized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support, which has significantly strengthened the NDLEA’s capacity to tackle the growing drug menace.
HURIWA highlighted the NDLEA’s numerous accomplishments, including its successful dismantling of drug cartels and the large-scale seizures of illegal narcotics, made possible by the full backing of the federal government. A notable example of the agency’s recent success is the interception of nearly two tonnes of cannabis, specifically “Ghanaian Loud,” at Eleko Beach in Lagos, leading to the arrest of six foreign nationals involved in the smuggling operation. These achievements demonstrate the agency’s unyielding commitment to curbing drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
“These successes reflect the NDLEA’s dedication to protecting Nigerians from the harmful effects of narcotics. Under General Buba Marwa’s dynamic leadership, the agency has not only disrupted powerful drug syndicates but has also restored public confidence in its ability to confront the drug epidemic with authority and effectiveness,” HURIWA stated.
The association also praised the NDLEA’s strategic emphasis on capacity building and training for its personnel. It noted the agency’s fruitful partnership with the German government, which resulted in a comprehensive two-week training program for officers. The program focused on critical areas such as crime scene investigation and the use of the West Africa Police Information System (WAPIS), ensuring that the agency’s workforce is well-equipped to counter the evolving methods employed by drug traffickers.
“Investing in training and development is crucial for staying ahead of sophisticated drug cartels. The NDLEA’s collaboration with international partners like the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) exemplifies the proactive steps needed to succeed in this ongoing battle,” HURIWA emphasized.
The association further commended President Tinubu for his steadfast support of the NDLEA and its leadership. HURIWA noted that the president’s backing has empowered the agency to achieve its significant milestones in the war on drugs. “President Tinubu’s unequivocal support underscores his administration’s commitment to a drug-free Nigeria and its determination to tackle the narcotic crisis head-on,” the group affirmed.
Looking toward 2025, HURIWA cautioned that drug traffickers may devise new and unconventional methods to counter the NDLEA’s efforts. Despite this, the association expressed confidence in the agency’s ability to adapt and maintain its effectiveness. “The year 2025 will be a critical period in the fight against narcotics. While drug cartels are likely to become more innovative in their operations, the NDLEA, with General Marwa’s visionary leadership, is well-positioned to overcome these challenges. The agency’s proven track record gives Nigerians hope that no matter the sophistication of the traffickers’ tactics, the NDLEA will continue to stay ahead,” HURIWA declared.
The association also called on the federal government to grant the NDLEA full financial autonomy to ensure sustained success in its operations. HURIWA emphasized that consistent and sufficient funding is vital to maintaining the agency’s efforts and preventing drug money from infiltrating the country’s political system, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
“Drug money has the potential to corrupt Nigeria’s democratic process. To safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections, it is crucial that the NDLEA is financially autonomous, ensuring it has the resources to protect our political landscape from the influence of illicit drug funds,” HURIWA warned.
In conclusion, HURIWA urged all Nigerians to rally behind the NDLEA and support its efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking. The association also appealed to state governments, civil society organizations, and international partners to collaborate with the agency in promoting drug prevention and awareness at all levels.
“HURIWA once again commends the NDLEA and its leadership. The agency’s remarkable achievements serve as a beacon of what can be accomplished with the right leadership, dedication, and support. We commend General Marwa and his team for their exceptional work, and we call on the federal government to continue backing them in this critical fight. Together, we can ensure a Nigeria free from the devastating impact of narcotics,” HURIWA concluded.
