Since his appointment as Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in June 2023, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi has set a benchmark for transformational leadership. Tasked with overseeing an institution pivotal to Nigeria’s trade and security, Adeniyi wasted no time in initiating reforms that have reshaped operations and strengthened public trust.

One of his first moves was to reduce customs checkpoints nationwide, a bold decision aimed at eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks. This singular act boosted trade facilitation, allowing businesses to operate more efficiently and enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a trade hub. Traders and logistics operators have lauded this decision, citing reduced delays and costs.

Recognizing the importance of trust between the NCS and the public, Adeniyi emphasized the need for officers to respect citizens’ rights. His insistence on professionalism has redefined how customs personnel interact with the public, fostering goodwill and reducing allegations of harassment.

On the global stage, Adeniyi revived long-dormant Customs Mutual Administrative Agreements (CMAA). This move re-established Nigeria’s position as a significant player in international trade and customs enforcement. Collaborative efforts with global partners have strengthened the NCS’s operational capacity, particularly in combating illicit trade.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of his tenure has been his decisive approach to national security. Under his watch, the NCS intercepted a staggering cache of contraband, including 800 rifles and 100,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in a shipping container from Turkey. These seizures underscore his commitment to protecting Nigeria from threats while addressing the public health crisis posed by illicit drugs like codeine cough syrup and painkillers.

Adeniyi’s vision for the NCS extends beyond immediate gains. His policies reflect a long-term commitment to transparency, efficiency, and security. By fostering international partnerships, respecting citizens’ rights, and tackling illegal trade head-on, Adeniyi has laid the groundwork for a modernized customs service poised to support Nigeria’s economic ambitions.

As stakeholders reflect on his leadership, Adeniyi’s tenure serves as a blueprint for what institutional reform should look like—a testament to what is possible when vision meets action.
