The Arewa Youths Assembly (AYA) has voiced strong opposition to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) proposed job cuts, labeling the decision as an affront to the Northern region and a disservice to Nigerians. The group has threatened mass protests should the apex bank proceed with the layoffs.

In a statement released in Kaduna by AYA Speaker, Muhammed Salihu Danlami, the group described the proposed action as a “profound injustice” to Nigerian citizens, particularly those from the North. According to Danlami, the plan disregards the socioeconomic realities of the nation and could worsen the plight of already struggling communities.

“At a time when our nation is grappling with severe economic challenges, the decision to let go of workers not only exacerbates the existing hardships but also reveals a disturbing disregard for the welfare of the citizens,” he stated.

A Call for Contextual Analysis

Danlami highlighted the fragile state of Nigeria’s economy, emphasizing the necessity of considering the broader context behind the layoffs. He pointed to various compounding factors, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, fluctuating global oil prices, and escalating security challenges, which have left the country in a precarious position.

He added, “The timing of this decision is especially troubling, as it undermines efforts to stabilize the economy and support the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians.”

Nationwide Implications

The AYA insists that such a policy, if implemented, would disproportionately impact the Northern region, where unemployment and poverty rates remain critically high. The group also argued that job cuts would further strain the nation’s unity, calling on the CBN to reconsider and adopt alternative measures to address its financial challenges.

Danlami warned that failure to reverse the proposal would lead to nationwide protests. “We will mobilize citizens across the country to resist this injustice. The CBN must demonstrate accountability and compassion, particularly at this critical juncture in our nation’s history.”

Broader Economic Concerns

The proposed layoffs are part of a broader restructuring effort by the CBN to streamline operations amidst fiscal pressures. However, critics argue that such actions could deepen public discontent and further destabilize an already fragile economy.

The AYA’s statement reflects the growing frustration among Nigerians regarding government policies perceived as neglecting the welfare of ordinary citizens, with analysts warning of potential repercussions for social cohesion and economic recovery.

The call for protests underscores the urgency for a more inclusive approach to policymaking, as stakeholders demand that decisions be guided by equity, fairness, and the collective good of all Nigerians.
