In a bid to revitalize education in Okerimi Oro, Kwara State, philanthropists from the local community have launched a significant intervention aimed at improving the learning environment in the area’s schools. The Okerimi Oro Education and Vocational Committee, in collaboration with key community leaders and stakeholders, recently initiated a fundraising campaign to support the renovation and infrastructure development of St. Peter’s Catholic LGEA Primary School, one of the oldest institutions in Kwara State, founded in 1942.

The school, which has shaped the lives of many professionals across various sectors, has long been a cornerstone of education in the region. However, despite its historical significance, the school has faced challenges, particularly with a lack of sustainable support and resources. Today, many of its critical facilities are in disrepair, hindering the educational experience of its pupils.

In honor of the school’s 82nd anniversary, the Education and Vocational Committee gathered community members, dignitaries, and alumni to raise funds for urgent renovations and upgrades. The event highlighted the school’s rich legacy and emphasized the need for immediate attention to its physical infrastructure.

Chief Mrs. Victoria Kehinde Afolayan, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, opened the event with a heartfelt address that celebrated the school’s achievements over the past 82 years. She acknowledged the contributions of past teachers and staff, which have shaped St. Peter’s into a beacon of learning for the community. “For more than eight decades, St. Peter’s Catholic LGEA Primary School, Okerimi Oro has been a beacon of knowledge and growth, shaping the minds of pupils,” she remarked.

However, she also highlighted the urgent need for repairs and improvements, noting that the school’s buildings were deteriorating and required significant renovation. “The fencing of the school needs completion, many classrooms need refurbishment, and the entire infrastructure must be revitalized to continue delivering quality education,” Afolayan stated.

While she expressed gratitude to the State Government for its past support, Afolayan called upon community philanthropists and stakeholders to contribute generously toward the school’s renovation efforts.

The school’s head teacher, Mrs. J. M. Fabayo, also reflected on the school’s rich history and praised the community for stepping in to assist during this critical time. “We must appreciate the efforts of the Okerimi Oro Education Committee for their unwavering support,” she said.

Fabayo shared the school’s achievements over the years, including a steady increase in student enrollment, the renovation of classrooms, the provision of modern ICT facilities through the Kwara State Government, and the construction of a security post and new toilet facilities.

Mrs. Margaret Yemisi Izuora, the mother of the day, applauded the school’s management for its dedication to providing meaningful educational opportunities and stressed the importance of collaboration between the community, individuals, and the government to maintain a conducive learning environment.

Mr. Adebayo Babalola, a community counselor and advocate for youth development, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of proactive counseling and moral guidance for students. Through his program, ‘The Miners Interface,’ many community children who had been at risk of falling into societal vices have instead embraced education and positive community involvement.

As the event came to a close, the commitment of the community to support St. Peter’s Catholic School in its journey to a brighter future was evident. The fundraising campaign is set to continue, with hopes that the contributions will ensure the school remains a center of excellence for generations to come.
