Minister Bosun Tijani Meets Telcos Over Proposed Telecom Tariff Hike Amid Economic Realities

As Nigeria grapples with rising economic pressures, the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, convened an urgent meeting with representatives of leading telecommunications companies to deliberate on the contentious push for a telecom tariff hike. Present at the meeting were industry heavyweights such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, and 9Mobile, alongside key regulators like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

This high-stakes dialogue underscores the evolving challenges within the telecom sector. Telecom operators argue that the removal of the petrol subsidy, coupled with the naira’s depreciation, has significantly increased operational costs, making a tariff adjustment inevitable. Subscribers, however, have expressed concerns about potential service disruptions and poor quality, which further fuel skepticism about the proposed tariff hike.

The federal government, through the NCC, has remained steadfast, urging Telcos to optimize existing pricing mechanisms under the 2013 tariff price floor framework. This position reflects a broader effort to balance affordability for consumers with the sustainability of telecom operations.

Reflecting on the industry’s past resilience, many recall similar tariff disputes during the early 2000s when mobile penetration began transforming Nigeria’s digital economy. Despite formidable challenges, telecom operators and regulators worked collaboratively to create pricing models that expanded access while maintaining profitability.

Today’s dialogue revives those critical conversations about the sector’s future and its alignment with national economic realities. Stakeholders now face the task of devising innovative solutions that cater to both consumers’ interests and the industry’s viability in these turbulent times.

Details to follow as developments unfold.
