The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has firmly rebutted a recent article published by Ships & Ports magazine, which claimed that eight aspirants are vying for the union’s presidency under alleged financial and governmental influences. This claim, which MWUN has dismissed as unfounded, has sparked concerns over the integrity of journalistic practices within the maritime sector.

The article, titled “MWUN Presidency: Eight Aspirants Jostle to Succeed Adeyanju Amidst Government, Financial Influences,” was published on January 6, 2025. In response, MWUN, through its Media Head and Deputy Secretary General, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, issued a press statement denouncing the report as speculative and misleading.

The statement clarified that the union had only just lifted the campaign ban on January 6, 2025, and was yet to issue forms for official declarations of candidacy. Consequently, any claims about aspirants or their strategies were dismissed as premature. Comrade Ikemefuna emphasized that MWUN’s leadership elections have always adhered to the principles of transparency, equity, and unity, with processes governed strictly by the union’s constitution.

“This baseless speculation undermines the integrity of our democratic process and disrespects the values we uphold as an organization,” the statement read. It further noted the incumbent President-General, Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, has maintained a neutral and transparent approach to leadership, ensuring a level playing field for all members.

The publication also alleged financial and government interference in the upcoming elections, which MWUN strongly refuted as laughable and unsubstantiated. “MWUN is a democratically run organization with a proud tradition of holding free and fair elections devoid of external interference,” Ikemefuna stated.

Reflecting on the legacy of past leaders, MWUN reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline, fairness, and respect for the union’s rules. The press statement acknowledged the constructive contributions of former leaders, countering claims that they meddle in leadership decisions.

Comrade Adeyanju’s leadership tenure has been marked by industrial peace and unwavering focus on members’ welfare, leaving a strong foundation for the next administration. The union warned against sensational journalism, urging media outlets to verify their information to avoid unnecessary tensions within the union and the maritime sector.

As MWUN prepares for its next phase of leadership, its members remain resolute in preserving the union’s democratic values. The forthcoming elections promise to reflect the collective will of members, free from undue influences or divisive narratives.

The union concluded by calling on stakeholders to focus on fostering industrial peace and supporting the growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry, a key driver of the nation’s economy.
