The divine workings of God often defy human reasoning, as illustrated in countless stories of people chosen for greatness despite humble beginnings. Unlike mortals who tend to value superficial qualities such as wealth, appearance, or lineage, God looks beyond these and focuses on character and purpose. The biblical tale of David’s unexpected rise to kingship serves as a reminder that divine selection often surprises human expectations.
This same narrative of divine favor and extraordinary grace applies to Zacchaeus Adelabu Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Born 47 years ago to a modest family in Iwo Ate, a small agrarian town in Oyo State, Zacch’s journey epitomizes the triumph of determination, brilliance, and God’s grace.
His father, a dedicated cocoa farmer, and his mother, a trader and farmer, raised him with strong values and the hope that he would contribute to the family’s farming enterprise. Unbeknownst to them, Zacch was destined for a far greater calling, one that would elevate their family name beyond the boundaries of their humble town.
Early Life and Educational Achievements
Zacch’s childhood was shaped by hard work and resilience. While attending school, he also assisted his father on the cocoa farm. This early exposure to financial management made accountancy a natural choice for his higher education. At the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Zacch excelled, earning a distinction in Accountancy for his Ordinary National Diploma (OND). He later pursued a degree in Management and Accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he graduated with First Class honors despite the loss of his father during this critical phase of his education.
Career Excellence in the Private Sector
Zacch’s professional journey began at Procter & Gamble (P&G), where his exceptional talent quickly earned him recognition. His financial acumen saved the company millions of dollars, leading to international opportunities, including training at a top business school in Switzerland. Rising rapidly through the ranks, he became the Corporate Finance Manager for West Africa, an accomplishment that set him apart as a young and dynamic professional.
It was during his tenure at P&G that Zacch encountered the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi in 2009. Their meeting marked a turning point in Zacch’s career, as Ajimobi saw in him the potential to make a difference in the public sector.
Public Sector Achievements
At just 33, Zacch was appointed Commissioner for Finance in Oyo State by Governor Ajimobi. He spearheaded transformative initiatives, including increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from N600 million to N2 billion monthly and reducing government accounts from over 100 to just 10 to curb financial leakages.
Later, as Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, Zacch implemented reforms that boosted productivity and service quality. His appointment as Special Adviser on Revenue by President Bola Tinubu further solidified his reputation as a trusted financial expert.
Transforming the FIRS
In his current role as FIRS Chairman, Zacch has brought unprecedented changes to Nigeria’s tax administration. Under his leadership, the agency surpassed its revenue target in 2023, prompting the government to set an ambitious benchmark of N19.4 trillion for 2024. His visionary leadership has not only transformed the agency but has also inspired confidence in Nigeria’s revenue-generation capabilities.
Humility and Leadership
Beyond his professional achievements, Zacch’s humility and approachability set him apart. He maintains a grounded personality, relating seamlessly with people across all social strata. His commitment to servant leadership aligns with Simon Sinek’s philosophy: “Leadership is not about being in charge but about taking care of those in your charge.”
Looking Ahead
As Zacch celebrates his 47th birthday, his life story serves as an inspiration to many. From a small cocoa-farming town to becoming Nigeria’s top tax administrator, his journey underscores the power of grace, hard work, and unwavering faith.
I join countless admirers and well-wishers in celebrating Zacch Adedeji, a man of exceptional brilliance, humility, and purpose. May the years ahead be filled with even greater accomplishments and continued service to humanity.
