At the press briefing held at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) new headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, unveiled an inspiring tale of transformation and excellence achieved in 2024. The event showcased the strides made under his leadership, spotlighting innovation, revenue generation, and national security contributions.

Raising the Bar in Revenue Collection
The Comptroller-General proudly announced that the NCS recorded its highest-ever revenue collection, crossing the ₦2 trillion mark. This achievement stemmed from reforms aimed at optimizing the collection process, eradicating revenue leakages, and leveraging advanced technology. These milestones have not only strengthened the nation’s economic base but also positioned the NCS as a critical player in Nigeria’s journey toward fiscal stability.

Technological Transformation and Modernization
Adeniyi emphasized the role of the e-Customs project, which facilitated seamless clearance processes and increased efficiency at ports and borders. With the adoption of artificial intelligence, automation, and blockchain technology, the NCS improved transparency, curbed smuggling activities, and significantly reduced turnaround times for trade facilitation.

A Renewed Focus on Security and Collaboration
The NCS also prioritized safeguarding Nigeria’s borders against illegal trade, collaborating with security agencies to intercept contraband goods and dismantle smuggling syndicates. In 2024, over ₦100 billion worth of illegal items were seized, including firearms, narcotics, and counterfeit products, reflecting the agency’s unwavering commitment to national security.

Empowering Personnel for a Brighter Future
Recognizing the critical role of its workforce, Adeniyi highlighted several initiatives aimed at staff welfare, capacity building, and career progression. Over 5,000 officers underwent specialized training programs, both locally and internationally, to align with global best practices. These efforts have fostered a motivated and efficient workforce driving the service’s success.

Reflections and Future Outlook
Reflecting on the year, Adeniyi expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its unwavering support, particularly in approving policies that facilitated the NCS’s operations. Looking ahead, the NCS is set to deepen its focus on trade facilitation, expand partnerships with global customs organizations, and achieve even greater milestones in 2025.

The 2024 achievements of the Nigeria Customs Service stand as a testament to the power of visionary leadership, strategic reforms, and relentless dedication. The legacy of Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi is one that inspires not just the NCS but the entire nation to aim for excellence.
