When Prof. Charles Anosike was appointed Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), it was widely seen as a fitting choice. Having previously served as the Director of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), Prof. Anosike brought a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of NiMet’s operations to the role.

Reflecting on his leadership goals, Prof. Anosike remarked, “I aim to create value at NiMet through improved use of meteorological data, enhanced prediction accuracy, and efficient dissemination of climate information. When individuals can make climate-smart decisions based on timely weather updates, it creates sustainable value. Additionally, staff welfare and capacity building are key priorities, ensuring that NiMet remains vibrant and impactful.”

Achievements in Leadership

Over the past year, Prof. Anosike has implemented transformative initiatives in line with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s 5-point agenda, led by the Honourable Minister, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN.

Operational Efficiency: In 2024, NiMet completed a comprehensive metadata exercise, updating weather observation stations nationwide.

Partnerships and Collaboration: NiMet secured a groundbreaking partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and strengthened collaborations with local and international agencies. A notable milestone was the second roundtable on the ‘Anticipatory Action Framework for Nigeria,’ convened in partnership with the Vice President’s Office and UNOCHA.

Maritime Engagement: A joint initiative with the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) was established to enhance maritime weather observation and early warnings.

Innovations and Technological Advancements

Under Prof. Anosike’s leadership, NiMet has embraced technological innovation:

A newly launched interactive website and active social media platforms provide real-time weather updates and engaging visuals.

A state-of-the-art digital weather studio now delivers improved graphics and animations comparable to global standards.

The ICT unit restored the NiMet Data Centre to near-optimal performance and integrated the Climsoft climate management system.

Focus on Capacity Building

To address staff concerns about training opportunities, Prof. Anosike has prioritized human capacity development:

State Meteorological Managers (SMMs) and senior management have undergone specialized training, including sessions on performance management systems.

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has granted recognition to NiMet’s National Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology (NMIST), enabling it to offer National Diploma programs in Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences.

Strengthened Stakeholder Confidence

Prof. Anosike’s people-oriented leadership style has fostered industrial harmony at NiMet. Constructive engagement with unions led to the resolution of long-standing issues, such as the payment of a 45-month minimum wage arrears, averting planned industrial action.

Revitalized Infrastructure and Services

Significant improvements have been made to NiMet’s infrastructure:

Renovation and equipping of the data archive center under the agency’s data rescue project.

Reactivation of the carpentry workshop at the Regional Training Center in Lagos, now serving both internal and external clients.

Future Outlook

Prof. Anosike has set ambitious goals for NiMet’s future, including enhancing monitoring and observation infrastructure, leveraging artificial intelligence for weather modeling, and strengthening public-private partnerships.

A Year of Impactful Leadership

In just one year, Prof. Anosike has redefined climate leadership at NiMet, earning the respect of stakeholders and setting the agency on a path of sustainable growth. With continued support from staff and partners, NiMet is poised to further its mandate of delivering accurate, timely weather and climate information for socio-economic development and safety.
