The Nigerian aviation sector is on the brink of a much-needed transformation, as Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), leads the charge to restore its lost glory. In a recent television interview, Mrs. Kuku shared insights into the sector’s challenges and the bold strategies being employed to address them.

Reflecting on years of decay, she acknowledged the sector’s shortcomings but urged stakeholders to focus on solutions rather than the past. “The aviation industry needs continuity in its projects, ensuring seamless transitions between administrations. Only then can we achieve sustainable growth,” she remarked.

Mrs. Kuku outlined several reforms already underway, including minor rehabilitation works at airports that have enhanced cleanliness, accessibility, and overall user experience. Infrastructure upgrades, such as improved lighting, seating arrangements, and facilities for persons with disabilities, are also being prioritized to meet international standards.

Economic viability remains a cornerstone of her vision. Emphasizing the need to stimulate tourism, business, and economic activities around airports, she identified cargo operations—especially in agriculture and pharmaceuticals—as vital growth drivers. Establishing transit hubs, she argued, would propel the sector’s contribution to national economic development.

Public-private partnerships (PPP) were also highlighted as essential for sustainable development. However, Mrs. Kuku advocated for a hybrid model that aligns private sector interests with government goals, supported by specialized financing and credit guarantees.

Addressing concerns over the high costs of the Abuja runway project, Mrs. Kuku clarified that the project encompasses more than just the runway. It includes critical infrastructure such as perimeter roads and fencing to ensure airside safety, underscoring her commitment to creating a secure and efficient aviation environment.

Recertification of Lagos and Abuja airports by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) remains a top priority. Mrs. Kuku stressed the importance of meeting global standards through continuous improvements, noting that safety and excellence cannot be compromised.

In a candid moment, Mrs. Kuku acknowledged the resistance she faces in her reform efforts but expressed her resolve to act in the sector’s best interests. “I’ve stepped on toes and will continue to do so, if necessary, but always with caution. If I find that my efforts aren’t yielding results, I am prepared to step down. What matters is doing what is right for Nigerians and ensuring critical infrastructure projects move forward.”

On corruption and bribery at airports, she adopted a tough stance, emphasizing zero tolerance for misconduct and encouraging Nigerians to report illicit activities.

Despite the challenges, Mrs. Kuku remains steadfast in her mission to reform Nigeria’s aviation sector. With a clear vision and unwavering determination, she is steering the sector toward global recognition, ensuring safer skies and a brighter future for Nigeria’s aviation industry.
