As the management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2), Lagos, gears up for the second phase of its media tours in the new year, the success of the first phase continues to spark interest among aviation industry stakeholders. The first phase, which took place in the previous year, offered BASL a platform to publicly share its continuous efforts to make MMA2 a leading destination for passengers and visitors. It also provided an opportunity for media houses to delve deeper into the operations of MMA2 and understand the challenges and triumphs BASL has faced over the past 17 years.
Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, BASL’s Head of Corporate Communications, shared that the media tour began with a visit to the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents Secretariat, and various prominent media houses such as The Guardian, The PUNCH, Vanguard, New Telegraph, The Nation, and Business Day have already hosted BASL management. Additional visits are planned for the new year.
During these visits, the BASL team, led by Mr. Remi Jibodu, Head of Aeronautical and Cargo Services/Acting Chief Operating Officer (COO), elaborated on how the company has maintained and grown MMA2 over the years. Discussions highlighted several ongoing and planned projects aimed at enhancing the terminal’s value as the first privately managed airport terminal in Nigeria. Jibodu emphasized BASL’s pioneering role in the establishment of MMA2 and discussed the establishment of the Equipment Management Department to oversee the maintenance of state-of-the-art equipment. The company’s investments also include a digital cold storage system to preserve perishable cargo and an enhanced surveillance system to address security concerns such as theft and stowaways.
Mrs. Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi also spoke about BASL’s collaboration with the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Center to raise breast cancer awareness as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, among other impactful projects.
According to Jibodu, MMA2 has proven that public-private partnerships can succeed in providing and managing social infrastructure in Nigeria. The cold storage system, which is the first of its kind in any domestic airport in the country, aims to address the increasing demand for the preservation of perishable goods. This innovation will help businesses confidently ship products, such as meats, immunization materials, and dairy, across Nigeria without the concern of spoilage. Jibodu stated that MMA2’s cold room will not only support cargo businesses but also contribute to revenue growth for the terminal.
“MMA2 has been built on the principles of innovation, excellence, and efficiency,” Jibodu said. “For over 17 years, we’ve pioneered various aspects of the aviation industry. Our continued focus is on elevating our vision in Nigeria.”
The media tours also provided insights into MMA2’s continuous commitment to improving passenger experience. Jibodu outlined the creation of an Equipment Management Department to ensure the terminal’s infrastructure remains at the highest standard, and emphasized the importance of operational excellence to improve airline on-time performance. MMA2 achieved a 62% on-time performance rate in April, which improved to 76% in May. The current average stands at 74%, with an ultimate target of 85-90%.
In response to passenger needs, BASL has improved Wi-Fi access across the terminal, including the food court, where passengers often spend time while waiting for delayed flights. The enhanced surveillance system at MMA2 has also been effective in preventing theft and stowaways, further demonstrating the terminal’s commitment to security and customer satisfaction.
The management of the media houses visited praised BASL for its outstanding maintenance of MMA2, acknowledging it as a model of success for Nigerian-run public infrastructure. The media tours have allowed both BASL and the public to reflect on the challenges of managing a multi-billion-naira facility and appreciate the ongoing efforts to ensure MMA2 remains a top choice for travelers.
As the second phase of the media tours commences, BASL continues its mission to share its successes, address future goals, and inspire further collaboration between the public and private sectors.
