The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has made a clarion call for enhanced collaboration among Nigeria’s security agencies to effectively combat smuggling and its adverse effects on the nation’s economy. Speaking at the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja on January 23, 2025, during a lecture for participants of Course 33, Adeniyi emphasized that inter-agency cooperation is critical to addressing illicit trade and safeguarding economic security.
The Call for Synergy
“No single agency can effectively combat the complexities of smuggling without the support and cooperation of others,” Adeniyi remarked. “Collaborating with other security agencies is essential for effective anti-smuggling operations. It is only through synergy that we can reduce these illegal activities to the barest minimum and foster economic growth in Nigeria.”
He underscored the need for a collective approach to disrupt smuggling networks, which continue to undermine the nation’s revenue generation and economic stability. Adeniyi highlighted the multifaceted nature of smuggling, ranging from illegal arms and contraband to under-invoicing and evasion of customs duties, all of which require coordinated efforts to address effectively.
Insights from the Lecture
Held at the NDC Auditorium, the lecture provided a platform for the Customs boss to delve into strategic solutions for tackling smuggling while safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests. The National Defence College, renowned for its role in developing strategic thinkers across military, paramilitary, and civilian sectors, brought together participants from various backgrounds to engage with Adeniyi’s insights.
He pointed out that smuggling is not just an economic issue but also a security threat, as it often involves organized criminal networks. Adeniyi proposed a framework for collaboration that includes intelligence sharing, joint training exercises, and synchronized enforcement operations to dismantle these networks.
Reflection on the Need for Unity
The Comptroller-General’s address serves as a critical reminder of the interconnectedness of security and economic stability. As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of revenue leakages, illicit trade, and border security, fostering synergy among agencies like the Nigeria Customs Service, the armed forces, and other paramilitary organizations is more vital than ever.
The lecture also highlighted the broader implications of smuggling, including its impact on local industries and job creation. By curbing illicit trade, Nigeria can create a more enabling environment for businesses to thrive, ultimately contributing to national development.
A Broader Vision for Collaboration
Senior officers, faculty members, and participants at the event praised Adeniyi’s presentation as a thought-provoking contribution to the discourse on security and economic protection. They agreed that his recommendations for inter-agency synergy provide a practical roadmap for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and optimizing anti-smuggling operations.
As the nation moves forward, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility among security agencies will be key to achieving sustainable economic growth and stability.
