In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s sports sector and empower the nation’s youth, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has partnered with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to host the prestigious African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship in Abuja.

This initiative, led by Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi, marks a strategic commitment to revitalizing Nigerian sports, engaging young athletes, and showcasing the country’s potential as a premier host for international sporting events.

Customs’ Vision for Sports Development

During a courtesy visit to Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, CGC Adeniyi emphasized the transformative power of sports in fostering national unity, building pride, and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

“For the first time in a long time, we have tested and accomplished professionals driving sports development in Nigeria. We have no doubt that the glory days of sports are back,” Adeniyi declared.

He further revealed that the Nigeria Customs Service had secured hosting rights from the Nigeria Olympic Committee, in collaboration with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, to stage the championship from April 1 to April 14, 2025.

The Customs Boss reaffirmed his agency’s unwavering support for the sports sector, pledging to deliver a tournament that would elevate Nigeria’s global reputation and provide a platform for African teams to compete at the highest level.

National Sports Commission Backs Customs Initiative

Reacting to the partnership, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko hailed the initiative as a game-changer for Nigerian sports, noting that it aligns with the nation’s broader efforts to position itself as a hub for international competitions.

“This championship is not just an opportunity to showcase our athletes but also a platform to inspire young Nigerians and demonstrate our organizational capabilities to the world. Sports are a unifying force, and we will ensure this event reflects the best of what Nigeria can offer,” Dikko assured.

He pledged the full backing of the Commission, including access to top-tier facilities, technical expertise, and logistical support, ensuring the event sets a new benchmark for sports tournaments in the country.

A Catalyst for Nigeria’s Sporting Renaissance

Also lending his voice, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engr Habu Gumel, praised CGC Adeniyi’s innovative approach to integrating sports within Customs operations. He highlighted the championship’s potential to reposition Nigeria as a leading force in African sports development.

We must be deliberate in our preparations and ensure that this championship becomes a springboard for hosting more international tournaments. The National Sports Commission is fully committed to providing all necessary support,” Gumel affirmed.
