The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a thorough investigation into the January 28, 2025, incident involving a Max Air Boeing 737-400 aircraft, registration 5N-MBD, at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
The aircraft, en route from Lagos to Kano with 53 passengers and six crew members aboard, safely landed at approximately 10:48 PM local time on runway 06. However, during the deceleration phase, while still traveling at less than 60 knots with thrust reversers engaged, a loud bang was heard, and the aircraft unexpectedly veered sharply to the left. The flight crew acted swiftly to regain control, bringing the aircraft to a full stop. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all passengers and crew safely disembarked.
In response to the incident, the NSIB deployed its GoTeam to the site of the occurrence to determine the root cause, investigating all technical, operational, and procedural factors that may have contributed. Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, affirmed the Bureau’s commitment to adhering to the highest aviation safety standards. The investigation aims to uncover critical findings and offer recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The NSIB will continue to provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
