A potential aviation disaster was averted at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) when a Max Air Boeing 737, registration 5N-MBD, suffered a nose wheel landing gear collapse and a rear tire burst while touching down on Runway 06/24 at 10:50 LT.
The aircraft, carrying 53 passengers and 6 crew members, was en route to Kano when the incident occurred. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
Emergency Response & Investigation Underway
Confirming the incident, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stated that the airport’s emergency response teams acted swiftly, ensuring the situation was contained in accordance with the airport’s emergency response plan.
“Emergency services responded promptly, and the situation was managed effectively, preventing any casualties. The aircraft was safely towed to Bay 5 for further inspection, and a full investigation is currently being conducted by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to determine the root cause of the failure,” Orah stated.
Resumption of Normal Flight Operations
Following the successful clearance of the affected runway, normal flight operations resumed at 08:00hrs after thorough inspections and safety checks were completed.
The NSIB’s ongoing investigation is expected to provide insights into potential safety concerns and preventive measures to avert future occurrences.
