In a groundbreaking move toward sustainability, LG Electronics has donated the University of Benin’s (UNIBEN) first-ever solar-powered borehole, significantly improving water supply on campus and reducing dependence on the national grid.
The commissioning of the borehole on Thursday, January 23, 2025, was attended by top university officials, LG Electronics representatives, student leaders, and hostel residents. The project is set to provide thousands of students and staff with a reliable, clean water source, cutting down utility costs while promoting renewable energy adoption.
LG’s Commitment to Sustainable Development
Speaking at the event, Mr. Paul Mba, Corporate Marketing Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable solutions.“At LG Electronics, we believe in using technology to improve lives. This solar-powered borehole is not just about providing water; it’s about creating a sustainable future where renewable energy plays a key role in meeting basic needs. We are proud to support UNIBEN in this initiative,” Mba stated.
He emphasized that UNIBEN is the first Nigerian university to receive such a donation and urged the university to prioritize maintenance to ensure long-term benefits.
UNIBEN Leadership Praises LG’s Impact
Expressing gratitude, UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, represented by Prof. Fred Ekhaise, Chairman of the Security Committee, described the project as a transformative intervention in tackling the institution’s water challenges.“This project is a game-changer for our university community. Access to clean water is essential for both academic and residential life, and having a solar-powered solution ensures reliability while promoting environmental responsibility. We deeply appreciate LG Electronics for this generous contribution.”
Like Oliver Twist, Prof. Omoregie appealed for more support from LG, urging the company to extend similar projects to other hostels struggling with inconsistent water supply.
Students Celebrate the Life-Changing Initiative
Students welcomed the initiative, hailing its potential to end frequent water shortages.
Student Union Government (SUG) President, Agboola Israel Timilehin, noted that erratic water supply had long disrupted campus life.“We often struggle with water, especially during peak hours. This borehole will make a huge difference, and the fact that it runs on solar energy means we won’t have to worry about power outages affecting availability,” he said.
Similarly, Prof. Clement Ighodaro, Dean of Students’ Affairs, commended LG Electronics for its generosity, urging students to appreciate and maintain the facility.
LG Electronics: A Champion of Sustainability
LG Electronics has built a reputation for supporting communities through sustainability-driven projects. This latest initiative reinforces its status as a responsible corporate citizen, advancing both technological innovation and environmental conservation.
With UNIBEN now leveraging solar energy for water access, the project sets a precedent for future green initiatives in Nigeria’s education sector, showcasing the transformative impact of public-private partnerships in addressing critical infrastructure needs.
