Edo State Governor, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant step in advancing inclusivity and social equity with the appointment of Theophilus Egbodion as the pioneer Chairman of the Edo State Commission for Persons with Disabilities. The appointment, confirmed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, takes effect from December 2024.
Theophilus Egbodion, a seasoned professional and dedicated public servant, has expressed profound gratitude to the governor, describing the appointment as a call to service. He reassured the public of his commitment to serving with compassion, ensuring that the rights and needs of persons with disabilities are prioritized.
Born in Uromi, Edo State, in 1978, Theophilus’ journey has been one of resilience and excellence. Despite being physically challenged, he has demonstrated remarkable dedication to both personal and professional growth. His educational journey began at Federal Government College, Warri, where he completed his secondary education in 2000. He later pursued his passion for technology at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science in 2006.
His commitment to public service was evident early in his career. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in Jos, Plateau State, in 2007, he exhibited strong leadership qualities that later earned him an appointment as Special Adviser to the Local Government Chairman of Esan North East. By 2011, Theophilus had joined the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) as a Data Processing Officer, where he has steadily risen through the ranks due to his expertise and diligence.
This appointment marks a significant milestone in Edo State’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity. It builds upon the foundation laid in July 2022 when the Edo State Government passed the Edo State Persons Living with Disability Law. The legislation was designed to protect the rights of persons with disabilities and ensure their full integration into society.
As the first Chairman of the Commission, Theophilus Egbodion is poised to champion policies and programs that will empower and uplift the community of persons with disabilities in Edo State. His leadership is expected to drive meaningful change, ensuring that inclusivity is not just a policy but a reality in the state.
