The 6th Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC), hosted by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) in 2022, remains a landmark event in shaping Africa’s oil, gas, and energy future. Under the leadership of PETAN Chairman, Mr. Nicolas C. Odinuwe, the conference provided a robust platform for fostering collaboration, innovation, and policy alignment among industry stakeholders.
At the heart of discussions was the emphasis on regional partnerships, the role of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in driving energy investments, and the need for government incentives to enable private-sector-led industry growth. Despite the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, PETAN underscored the resilience of the industry, highlighting how digitization and market stabilization were driving a new wave of energy innovations.
Key speakers, including H.E. Dr. Chief Timipre Sylva (then Minister of State for Petroleum Resources), Mr. Mele Kyari (GCEO, NNPC Ltd.), and Engr. Simbi Wabote (Executive Secretary, NCDMB), reinforced the call for deeper cross-border partnerships and investments across the entire energy value chain. The vision of SAIPEC was not just about convening stakeholders but about creating an ecosystem where indigenous African players take the lead in transforming the continent’s energy landscape.
Looking back, SAIPEC 2022 set the tone for Africa’s energy self-sufficiency, reaffirming PETAN’s role as a key driver of local content development, economic growth, and job creation in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. The event’s success continues to inspire future editions of SAIPEC, reinforcing PETAN’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and positioning Africa as the world’s next energy frontier.
