In a significant inspection tour of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos today, the Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Board, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, and FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, reaffirmed their commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s airport infrastructure while addressing longstanding challenges.

Speaking after his assessment of the airport, Alhaji Ganduje shared his impressions of the facility, highlighting the agency’s strengths and areas requiring urgent attention.

“This morning, we had an inaugural session with the MD and all the directors, where we received an overview of FAAN’s functions. Now, seeing things firsthand, we’ve observed critical infrastructure, operational equipment, and environmental conditions, along with the challenges already outlined by the MD. My impression is that FAAN has a highly competent Managing Director and directors, who have demonstrated motivation and a vision for improvement. However, there are challenges that we must address collectively to align with global aviation standards,” he stated.

The FAAN Chairman pointed out the issue of abandoned projects, outdated equipment, and financial constraints as major bottlenecks affecting airport operations. He stressed that several projects, awarded years ago, have stalled due to rising costs and technological obsolescence. Despite these hurdles, he noted that FAAN has devised strategic solutions to revamp these projects and optimize resource utilization.

In her remarks, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku provided updates on the agency’s ongoing efforts to enhance airport security, passenger experience, and infrastructure.

“As you may have seen, we recently commenced the process of replacing security equipment. We have introduced a number of explosive detection devices to enhance safety across our airports. Additionally, terminal rehabilitation efforts are gaining momentum, with major infrastructure development projects lined up for both Lagos and Abuja airports. We are also improving facilities for passengers with disabilities and enhancing VIP lounges to ensure a world-class travel experience,” she said.

On FAAN’s policy directives for 2025, the MD emphasized a continued focus on safety and security, citing enhanced safety policies, airport recertifications, and runway rehabilitation projects.

“We began last year with a strong emphasis on safety and security in our airside operations. This year, we are closely collaborating with the NCAA to implement our enhanced safety policies. Recertification of Kano and Port Harcourt airports is underway, following the successful recertification of two airports last year. Additionally, various runway and terminal rehabilitation projects are progressing, aimed at improving cost recovery and passenger experience,” she added.

As FAAN pushes forward with these ambitious plans, both the Chairman and the MD expressed optimism that with sustained efforts, Nigeria’s airports will attain world-class operational efficiency, enhancing the nation’s aviation sector and economic growth.
