Access Bank PLC marked a decade of excellence with the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, reinforcing its dedication to community development, sustainability, and African sporting excellence. Since its inception in 2016, the marathon has grown into a premier global event, drawing elite athletes and thousands of participants from across Africa and beyond.
This year’s edition, themed “Miles to Memories,” was especially poignant as it paid tribute to the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings PLC, whose visionary leadership helped transform the marathon into one of Africa’s most prestigious sporting events.
The race kicked off at the National Stadium, Surulere, with participants traversing iconic Lagos landmarks, including the Third Mainland Bridge, before crossing the finish line at Eko Atlantic City. Beyond being a test of endurance, the event showcased Lagos’s rich cultural vibrancy and scenic beauty.
Reflecting on the marathon’s evolution, Chizoma Okoli, Deputy Managing Director of Access Bank, stated:
“A decade ago, we set out to create a marathon that would unite people, promote healthy living, and highlight the potential of our continent. Today, we celebrate not just a race, but a movement that has touched millions of lives. From elite athletes to everyday runners, this marathon symbolizes resilience, triumph, and connection.”
She further emphasized that the race mirrors Access Bank’s broader vision:
“Just as this marathon has grown into Africa’s leading road race, Access Bank remains committed to building a platform that empowers dreams, strengthens communities, and elevates Africa’s presence on the global stage.
