The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is undergoing a period of revitalization, marked by leadership that is both visionary and pragmatic. During his recent tour of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, FAAN Board Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, shared his reflections on the agency’s progress, challenges, and future direction. His insights, combined with those of FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, paint a picture of an aviation sector poised for significant transformation.

A First-Hand Impression: Strength in Leadership

Alhaji Ganduje’s visit was not just ceremonial—it was an opportunity to assess FAAN’s operational realities. Following an inaugural briefing session with FAAN’s leadership team, he embarked on an on-the-ground inspection of the agency’s facilities. His key takeaway was a deep sense of confidence in the competence and commitment of FAAN’s leadership.

“The agency is blessed with a competent Managing Director and directors. I have seen signs of motivation, seriousness, and a clear drive for achievement. Of course, there are challenges, but what is important is that we have begun discussing solutions,” Ganduje remarked.

Drawing comparisons with international aviation standards, he emphasized that world-class airports are not just products of advanced technology but of effective management and visionary leadership.

Challenges and Strategic Focus

Despite the evident progress, Ganduje acknowledged several longstanding issues, including abandoned projects from previous administrations, rising costs of aviation infrastructure, and outdated equipment. However, he expressed confidence in FAAN’s approach to tackling these issues.

“Some of these abandoned projects date back many years, and with inflation, their costs have skyrocketed. Some equipment initially installed has now become obsolete. However, the management has designed a roadmap to resolve these challenges, ensuring that these projects are either scaled or repurposed for better utility,” he explained.

MD Kuku’s Vision: Bold Steps for Safety, Security, and Infrastructure

In an exclusive interview, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, provided deeper insights into the agency’s ambitious reform agenda.

She revealed that FAAN has already begun replacing outdated security equipment with state-of-the-art explosive detection devices, reinforcing the commitment to passenger safety.

“We have now introduced a number of explosive detection devices to ensure our environment is safe and secure. This is a nationwide project, and it’s just the beginning of several major upgrades,” Kuku said.

Infrastructure Overhaul: A New Era for Nigerian Airports

FAAN is also focused on a sweeping overhaul of its terminal facilities. The agency is actively rehabilitating major terminals across the country, including significant upgrades at Lagos and Abuja airports.

“You will start seeing more large-scale infrastructure projects rolling out in the coming months. This includes major renovations to ensure better passenger experiences, improved facilities for persons with disabilities, and a complete revamp of VIP lounges,” she added.

Policy Direction for 2025: Safety, Certification, and Efficiency

As 2025 approaches, FAAN’s strategic vision remains clear. Kuku emphasized that safety and security will continue to be top priorities, with enhanced policies already being rolled out in close collaboration with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

“We started last year with a strong focus on runway safety and security, and this year, we are expanding that. We are also pushing for the recertification of Kano and Port Harcourt airports, following our successful recertification of two airports last year,” she disclosed.

Additionally, runway rehabilitation projects and terminal upgrades are being fast-tracked to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.

While significant strides have been made, both Ganduje and Kuku acknowledge that FAAN is still on a journey toward achieving world-class aviation standards. However, the current trajectory signals a promising future for Nigeria’s airports.

With a leadership team focused on delivering results, FAAN is well-positioned to overcome its challenges and set new benchmarks for excellence in the aviation industry.
