The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has made history by surpassing the ₦1 trillion revenue mark, earning widespread commendation from legislators. This milestone cements LIRS’s reputation as Nigeria’s leading sub-national revenue agency, reflecting its efficiency, transparency, and commitment to modern tax administration.
Former Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budgeting, Hon. Lukman Sa’ad Olumoh, and Hon. Femi Saheed, former Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, lauded LIRS and its Executive Chairman, Mr. Ayodele Subair, for their exceptional leadership in driving Lagos State’s revenue growth.
Speaking at the 2024 budget signing ceremony, Hon. Olumoh described the achievement as a game-changer, positioning Lagos State as a model for other states. He credited LIRS’s success to its professional management and innovative approach, stressing that sustained efficiency in revenue collection could reduce the state’s reliance on external borrowing.
“You cannot expect outstanding results without competent leadership. LIRS operates like a world-class institution, fostering excellence in tax administration. Under Mr. Ayodele Subair’s leadership, the agency has undergone remarkable transformation, enhancing its operational environment and work culture,” Olumoh remarked.
Looking ahead, he revealed that Lagos State has set a 2025 revenue target of ₦1.4 trillion, expressing confidence that LIRS’s structured reforms and improved tax compliance would drive this growth without overburdening residents. He further projected that Lagos has the potential to generate over ₦4 trillion in internal revenue.
Hon. Femi Saheed, in a congratulatory message to Mr. Subair, acknowledged LIRS’s dedication and resilience, assuring that the Lagos State House of Assembly would continue to provide legislative support to strengthen its operations.
“LIRS’s commitment to excellence and transparency has set a new benchmark in revenue administration. This achievement brings pride to Lagos State, and we look forward to even greater milestones in 2025,” Saheed stated.
With this historic feat, LIRS continues to redefine tax administration in Nigeria, setting a precedent for other states in effective revenue generation.
