The public launch of A Journey in Service, the autobiography of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), was not just a literary event—it became a statement of power, influence, and financial muscle. Held under the auspices of the IBB Presidential Library Foundation, the occasion showcased a gathering of Nigeria’s elite, reinforcing Babangida’s lasting imprint on the nation’s political and economic landscape.

The staggering ₦17bn raised in donations underscored the former leader’s enduring connections. Aliko Dangote led the pack with an ₦8bn pledge—structured as ₦2bn annually over four years—while Abdulsamad Rabiu followed with ₦5bn. Other high-profile contributors, including billionaire businesswoman Folorunsho Alakija, added to the financial outpouring, though some chose discretion over disclosure.

For many, this event revived reflections on Babangida’s tenure—an era marked by economic restructuring, political maneuvering, and controversial decisions that continue to shape Nigeria’s governance. His supporters see the donations as a testament to his statesmanship, a recognition of his service, and the impact of his policies. Detractors, however, argue that such immense funds should have been directed toward pressing national concerns—education, healthcare, and technological advancement—rather than celebrating a leader whose legacy remains a subject of debate.

The book, now available at major bookstores for ₦40,000 (paperback) and ₦50,000 (hardback), serves as Babangida’s narrative of his years in service. Whether it will offer fresh insights or reinforce existing perceptions remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—the event reaffirmed the unbreakable link between Nigeria’s political and business elite.
