Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to strengthening maritime collaboration with The Gambia to bolster regional security and economic development. The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, made this declaration at the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul, The Gambia.

Representing the Minister, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), highlighted Nigeria’s resolve to expand its maritime security infrastructure beyond its borders. He revealed ongoing discussions regarding the possible extension of the Deep Blue Project’s operations to a broader area within the Gulf of Guinea.

“Nigeria remains committed to being a stabilizing force, fostering cooperation, and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy. In light of recent disruptions in global trade, particularly due to the crisis in the Suez Canal, Africa has seen an increase in shipping traffic. To address this, Nigeria is actively working on expanding the operational coverage of its Deep Blue assets to enhance regional maritime security,” Dr. Mobereola stated.

Beyond security initiatives, Nigeria is seeking re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council (Category ‘C’) for the 2026-2027 biennium. Dr. Mobereola urged delegates at the conference to rally behind Nigeria’s bid, emphasizing the country’s potential to strengthen Africa’s influence in global maritime decision-making.

“Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for the IMO Council under Category ‘C’ for the 2026-2027 term. We appeal for the support of MOWCA member states in the upcoming 34th IMO Assembly Session. Our continued representation will ensure Africa’s interests are well-represented in critical areas such as blue economy policies, maritime security, and environmental sustainability,” he added.

Dr. Mobereola further noted that Nigeria’s strides in maritime security have garnered global recognition, with both the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the IMO commending the country for maintaining a zero-piracy record in its waters for three consecutive years through the Deep Blue Project.

With a firm commitment to regional collaboration, security enhancement, and economic integration, Nigeria continues to champion sustainable blue economy initiatives across West and Central Africa.
