As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility, Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) PLC has reinforced its support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) by donating vital medical equipment to the agency’s clinic at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Strategic Command.
During the official handover, Mrs. Boma Ukwunna, Executive Director, Cargo Services, who represented SAHCO’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, commended NDLEA’s relentless efforts in combating drug-related activities, particularly within SAHCO’s cargo handling facilities.
She emphasized SAHCO’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with NDLEA in ensuring Nigeria’s aviation sector remains free of illicit drug operations.
“We recognize the profound consequences of drug trafficking and substance abuse, especially on our youth. The NDLEA’s dedication to safeguarding our cargo warehouses has been commendable, with enhanced surveillance and personnel deployment. This donation is our way of reinforcing our partnership and appreciation for their work,” Aboderin stated.
She further assured NDLEA of SAHCO’s willingness to identify more areas of support in the fight against drug trafficking.
“This gesture reflects our deep respect for the agency’s critical role. We will continue to stand firmly with NDLEA in ensuring a drug-free aviation environment,” she added.
Receiving the donation, Commander Usman Ali Wadar of NDLEA’s MMIA Strategic Command expressed profound gratitude to SAHCO, highlighting the immense impact the medical equipment would have on their operations and the larger airport community.
“This donation goes beyond our agency—it will serve the entire Hajj camp community. The only other available medical facility is the Airforce hospital, which is quite far from our command. The establishment of our clinic was necessary to provide urgent medical care for drug suspects under observation, as some arrive in critical condition after ingesting illicit substances,” Wadar explained.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s growing drug abuse challenge, Wadar shared alarming statistics:
“In 2018, over 14 million Nigerians tested positive for drug use. Since assuming office, we have implemented stringent measures that have significantly reduced drug seizures at Lagos airport—from 23 tonnes in 2022 to just seven tonnes. This is a major milestone in our ongoing battle against drug trafficking.”
He recounted a recent case where a suspect required immediate medical intervention due to dangerously high blood sugar levels.
“Without prompt medical attention, that suspect’s life could have been lost. Having a well-equipped medical facility ensures that suspects receive necessary care while in custody,” Wadar noted.
The donated medical equipment includes an automated haematology analyser, incubator, centrifuge machine, weighing scale, poison box, sphygmomanometer, lipid profile meter, and Ambu bags.
Wadar assured that the equipment would be put to effective use, extending heartfelt appreciation to SAHCO’s management and staff for their continued support.
